Partney

2001 Statistics

We now have access to the Census returns for Partney from 1841 to 1901.

The National Census is taken every 10 years.  The details are kept private for 100 years as they contain personal information.  The early census was essentially a headcount.  However from 1841 more information is available.  Over the next few months information of, we hope, interest to the visitor will be extracted and published.

As a start, the following table shows figures extracted from the available censuses showing the change in size of Partney during the 19th century.

YEAR Properties Men Women TOTAL Born in Partney Born elsewhere in Lincolnshire Born Outside Lincolnshire
1841 90 232 236 468 444 24
1851 110 233 256 489 224 245 20
1861 106 233 252 485 220 231 34
1871 109 256 239 495 226 231 38
1881 112 218 206 424 190 210 24
1891 95 173 172 345 163 145 37
1901 86 150 152 302 139 119 44

As can be seen, the population of the parish declined by a third over the century.  By way of clarification, the 1841 Census only showed the place of birth as either in, or outside, Lincolnshire.  The column headed 'Born elsewhere in Lincolnshire' includes those born in adjoining parishes such as Dalby and Skendleby as well as further afield.

Interestingly, there has always been a small percentage, 5% to 7%, of residents born outside the county.  Indeed the 1851 Census includes two residents born in British Guiana,  the 1871 Census two born in New Zealand, the 1881 Census a resident born in Canada and the 1901 Census one person born in India.
