The actor Stephen Murray was born in Partney on 6th September 1912. He started his stage career in 1933 but was seldom seen to best advantage in his film appearances. His film debut was as the second police officer in Pygmalion in 1938. He then went on to appearances in London Belongs To Me (1948), Four Sided Triangle (1953) and A Tale of Two Cities (1958) amongst many other roles. On television he played Sir Frances Walsingham in the BBC's 1970 production Elizabeth R opposite Glenda Jackson. He found his greatest fame as then new Number 1, later promoted to Commander, in The Navy Lark on BBC Radio. He stayed in the role from October 1959 until January 1976. He died on 31st March 1983.
